"Denitsa Milusheva draws attention to the self-creation of a hedonistic 'Self' on social media, approaching herself as a media entity ('Intermediate Spaces', 2024)."
Denitsa Milusheva’s artwork In-Between Fantasy and Reality navigates the shifting boundaries between digital and physical existence, fantasy and reality, self and alter ego. Using poetic text as an open invitation to a participatory game, she encourages viewers to construct alternate identities—blurring the line between personal authenticity and curated online personas. The light sign, displaying images from a fictional Instagram account, is an artifact of digital culture and a portal into the in-between space where self-construction occurs.
Milusheva questions how digital platforms expand and confine identity by situating her piece within the theoretical frameworks of Victor Turner and Byung-Chul Han. By exploring these shifting boundaries and theoretical perspectives, Milusheva highlights the tension between constructed identities and authentic selves. As a result, her work challenges us to reconsider what it means to be authentic and seen. How does the oscillation between the digital and actual create in-between spaces?
